Of the three newest Walt Disney Treasures DVD packages, this is perhaps the lesser known, but it is by no means the least important. It’s what used to be known as “rip-roaring” great adventure, produced on a rich, grand scale unheard-of during the period in which it first appeared.

“Dr. Syn,” which was based on British novels and legends explained on a fascinating documentary also included on disc one, is a Robin Hood or Zorro of sorts. But the difference is that Dr. Syn is a highly respected minister who completely fools the pompous bad guys. Yet, in this three-part series, the villains are fleshed out and not caricatured. The dignity and seriousness of the drama holds up beautifully today without the slightest sense of cliché.

In this 2-disc set, you get all three WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOR hours with introductions by Walt himself, plus the edited feature-length version released theatrically in Europe in the 60’s and then in the U.S. in the 1970’s. But the aspect ratio of the original print has been restored for this release so you’ll even see the television versions in more depth than before, with gorgeous restored prints and sound that especially brings out the lush musical score (I wish it was on a separate track!)

And speaking of music, you’ll get to see who sings the haunting “Scarecrow” theme–Terry Gilkyson, who also wrote “The Bare Necessities,” along with George Patterson and The Wellingtons. The only detail left out is that The Wellingtons are best known for singing the Gilligan’s Island theme in its first season (there’s more about them in “Mouse Tracks”).

The other mini-documentary traces Walt Disney’s long and fruitful live-action movie enterprises in the United Kingdom with comments by several of those involved including director Ken Annakin. It’s great that the live-action part of Walt Disney’s art is getting recognized and appreciated.

Most of all, if you are a fan of the TV classics The Prisoner or Secret Agent, you have to have this because Patrick McGoohan is in top form in this film, even to his remarkably varied speaking voice which transforms his character as much as his mask.

This Disney classic was based on the novel “Doctor Syn: A Tale of the Romney Marsh” written by Russell Thorndike and premiered on the TV Show World of Disney in 1963. This three part series was later edited as a movie and released theatrically six years later. Both the original three part series as well as the theatrical movie are included here.

Essentially an updated Robin Hood style tale set in the 1700s it’s a great family movie. While it is a bit dated now compared to other swashbuckling summer blockbusters (after all, it was made for TV originally) it offers a simple moral story and excellent acting, especially by Patrick McGoohan, who plays the title role.

I loved this show as a kid, and it’s well worth revisiting, young and old.

With Days of Thunder, director Tony Scott tried to do for the Indy 500 what he did for the U.S. Air Force with Top Gun. But without Top Gun’s go-go soundtrack and visual feats, Scott merely ends up with a Tom Cruise vehicle that’s out of gas.

Cruise plays (what else?) a cocky, upstart stock-car racer who faces down ruthless racing opponents. Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, Cary Elwes, and Randy Quaid do the laps around this movie’s tiresome track with Cruise, while director Scott attempts to propel the action along with his trademark visceral, gritty but glamorous visual style.

Days of Thunder is notable, however, as a turning point in Cruise’s then one-dimensional career. After this film–having tired even his most devoted fans by playing a bartender, an air force pilot, and a stock-car driver–Cruise was forced to take on real character parts. –Ethan Brown

In the low tradition of knockoff horror flicks best seen (or not seen) on a drive-in movie screen, Steven Spielberg’s sequl to Jurassic Park is a poorly conceived, ill-organized film that lacks story and logic. Screenwriter David Koepp strings along a number of loose ideas while Jeff Goldblum returns as Ian Malcolm, the quirky chaos theoretician who now reluctantly agrees to go to another island where cloned dinosaurs are roaming freely. Along with his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) and daughter, Malcolm has to deal with hunters, environmentalists, and corporate swine who stupidly bring back a big dino to Southern California, where it runs amok, of course. Spielberg doesn’t seem to care that the pieces of this project don’t add up to a real movie, so he hams it up with big, scary moments (with none of the artfulness of those in Jurassic Park) and smart-aleck visual gags (a yapping dog in a suburb mysteriously disappears when a hungry T-rex stomps by). The legend of Mississippi blus master Robert Johnson has served as a fountainhead for generations of blus and rock musicians, as well as a powerful fable for the dark, often violent mysteries of delta blus. Johnson’s mythic deal with the Devil, in exchange for his extraordinary musical gifts, has become a fixture in blus lore and an example of the enduring pull of superstitions that can be traced back to Mother Africa and Yoruba deities. Producer-director Walter Hill (The Long Riders, Streets of Fire) sought to put this uniquly American mystery on film, but when he was unable to secure a script devoted directly to Johnson himself, Hill bravely decided to proceed with a more obliqu, allegorical story that retold the Satanic bargain through a fictionalized drama set in the present day. In this 1986 feature, the hero is Eugene, a classically trained guitar virtuoso pulled toward the earthier powers of blus. When he stumbles across a lost blus legend, Willie Brown (a real blus figure and Johnson peer known for his partnerships with Charley Patton and Son House, among others), Eugene begins an odyssey back to the delta country and the crossroads of the title, where both Willie and Johnson had traded their souls for blus power, to help the surviving blusman renegotiate terms.

An opening sequnce, shot in sepia-toned black and white, dramatizes Johnson’s own supernatural encounter, as well as one of the blusman’s historic Texas recording sessions, and Hill’s visuals combine with frequnt collaborator Ry Cooder’s reliably authentic slide guitar to offer a promising glimpse of cinematic conjury. Even the satanic villain–a grinning huckster named Scratch–honors the trickster figure familiar to African American superstitions, rather than a generic devil. Willie Brown (Joe Seneca) is likewise a convincing link to the blus past, but Hill’s central casting choice–Ralph (The Karate Kid) Macchio–sacrifices all for marqU valu, a Hobson’s choice that casts a shadow of unintended parody across the film. Macchio’s earlier character, not Scratch, haunts this film, and even a nifty dul between Eugene, his slashing fretwork supplied off-camera by Cooder, and Scratch’s ax-wielding henchman, heavy metal virtuoso, and one-time Frank Zappa protege Steve Vai, can’t safely rescu the film. –Sam Sutherland
